Media units are not essential... but they are awesome. If you want a piece of fitted furniture to point all your other furniture at or something at the edge of the room for ornaments and music equipment etc. then a media unit is the thing. Any space is prime for a media unit and any room can house one. Designed well they make relaxing and enjoying movies or music an even greater pleasure.
